We have fish profiles, the Chinese Algae Eater is included, click on the shaded name to see the profile with photos. Profiles in general are under the second tab from the left in the blue bar across the top of the page. If the CAE isn't what you have, check the profiles under catfish and Cyprinids, as any "algae eater" is likely to be within one of these.

One important point we all learn, is never buy a fish that will be when full grown too large for the tank you now have. Along the way trouble will ensue, believe me. Always research a fish and know its requirements, traits, behaviours, etc. before acquiring it. Most of us have learned this the wrong/hard way, so don't feel bad about that.

This is a scientific hobby, and the enclosed bit of nature we have in any aquarium has a lot to it.

Maybe your algae eater is an otocinclus. They only get to be 1 1/2 inches and kind of resemble a young CAE.

I feel your pain. I've currently screwed up with three aquariums. Trying to fix ick and ammonia at the same time. Guess what my ammonia level is - .25.

When I cycled my tank I used a bottle of TSS plus some established bio-media from a friends tank close by. By day 7 the tank was showing 20ppm nitrates. But I had the same .25 ammonia problem until day 15 and it took a 20% WC on that day to finally get rid of it.

I think fish monger is right, put your bio-wheel back in, keep doing 20% WCs and don't touch anything else. It should work itself out. A bottle of TSS might help since you created a mini-cycle by removing bio-wheel, but the stuff isn't cheap and I know not everyone is convinced it helps. Patience and water changes are your best bet.
