I was going to go with the aquaclear unit after much research, it is about the best you can get for HOB. We have one at the office and you only hear the water falling out so keep your water high.
Canister = more money, BUT, I am really impressed with the Marineland C series. Quiet, easy to service, very adjustable as far as media is concerned and much quieter than I expected.... once the silly "bio-balls" are removed, they just rattled in the water flow. It has a basket of ceramic which far surpass the plastic balls so they are more than redundant. I put the unit under the tank in the cabinet. In the ambient noise of the house I cannot tell that it is running. Here's a link
to a quick mini review that I did on it. I used the C-220 which is rated for a 55gallon for my 37 gallon. You could put a flow restrictor on the output hose, baffle the output, use an expanded output or just step down to the C-160. If you restrict the flow you do have a filter that, in future, can handle a larger tank.
Best value I found in canister filters if you don't go with the aquaclear HOB.
