I haven't been here for a couple weeks.. I've been working on eliminating the diatom issue in my tank (which, of course, is only on the plants..). It seems like there's a light at the end of the tunnel now, and I can finally see the amount of diatoms decreasing. I've currently got a 28 gallon tank with some live plants.. Fish currently in the tank are 2 German Blue Rams, 9 Harlequin Rasboras, and 4 false julii corys. I've also got some ghost shrimp (that haven't been eaten in the last month they've been in here - kindof a shocker!), some nerite snails, and I just moved my 1 African Dwarf Frog to this tank as well.
I was curious if I can still add maybe 5-7 neon tetras, or would the tank be over crowded? I'd previously had 5 harlequins and 5 zebra danio and the tank looked sortof crowded to me, but I'm not sure if that's just because the danio were constantly all over the tank? I've read that neons are another fairly tightly schooling fish, and this is the sort of look I would be going for.
Would they be a good match for my other fish? Would it be overcrowded? From what I'm reading, it doesn't seem like there'd be any issue, but I want to be sure.
And lastly, should I wait until the diatoms are gone, or just go ahead and add them to the tank?
Also, since I moved my frog back into my community tank, I've now got an empty 5 gallon tank. I was thinking of maybe getting a puffer fish, but are they too sensitive? The 5 gallon sits in an area that gets a bit of sunshine for a couple hours.. and it gets a lot of indirect sunlight throughout the day, enough that my plants have been thriving in there with no lights on (even my wisteria!). I haven't really bothered too much with setting up the tank, it's still got a bare bottom and just has some spare decorations and plants in it. I don't have a thermometer so I'm not sure if the sunshine does increase the temp a lot or not. Would a betta be a better option? Are they a hardier fish that would be more tolerant of any temp changes, or should I just go ahead and move the tank elsewhere? Also, are there any other options for a 5 gallon tank? I know ADF are an option, but I'm not looking to keep a tank of them. Mine didn't seem very happy in that small of a tank anyways, but maybe that's just me.
