Hi everyone I am going to be setting up a 10 gallon tank with a soil substrate and lots of plants to house mainly red cherry shrimp and MTS. I would like to add Celestial Pearl Danios as the only fish in the tank but they like a water hardness of 5 or less and mine is 8 is there anyway I can lower the hardness or is there another small fish you guys can suggest that would work in my tank and not be a treat to the shrimp. My ph stays around 7.2 and like I said the hardness is around 8.

Thank you again so much for sending them to me I am so looking forward to getting them. I could just keep this as a shrimp and snail only tank. I set it up a little while ago and it is really dirty right now but I think its going to be nice when the plants fill in. What other kind of shrimp could I put with them that they will not cross breed with?

An RO systems softens water. It is probably the best solution but it is obviously a chunk of money to invest.

Boiling water can soften it, but consider you would need to boiled enough water and let it cool every time you change water. So you can by distilled water and mix it with tap to create softer water.

There is also a way to filter your water through peat, but the process sounds like a pain to be honest.

Oh also do you think the shrimps would rather have a rock mountain looking thing to climb on or a tera cota pot? I have some java moss that I plan on putting around which ever you think they would like more and I also plan on getting a nice smaller piece of driftwood to put in there as soon as I can get a ride to the LFS. I can't drive myself right now because of my back injury.

They had a used RO system at the LFS a couple weeks ago before I hurt my back for $100 but I don't know if they still have it. Even if they did with me not working right now and not getting my workers comp checks yet I can't afford to buy it. Any body got any ideas of another fish I could use besides Ember Tetras?
