Building a sort of..Seperation Wall?

So comes time within the next couple weeks to do some much needed re-vamping.

I want to keep my exisiting substrate in the tank(fine neutral/natural) looking gravel..but I want to make a sort of..running river bed I guess of black sand? I know that if I just put it in the tank it will quickly mix on it's own, not to mention with the help of the fish...so my question is..
HOW have people done this?
HAVE they..?

and if so, could I possibly steal some pointers:)

Thanks!

well depending on your setup it may not mix, or may just need occasional fixing/adding of a little gravel. Or something else you can do is cut a black trash bag to a correct side piece. Make a depression in the substrate and lay it there, then put the black substrate on top of it.

You could always glue the black sand to something with silicone, maybe make something like those fake rock backgrounds.

depending on grain size of the sand, a mesh could work to seperate the two. It should be porous enough to allow for circulation and keep the sand seperate.
