Bug in tank

I have a discus planted tank. The plants grow up to the surface and spread out. The surface is kept pretty still, though a lot of filtration is in the tank.

Today I took a stick and mixed up the leaves to get some food that was trapped in the leaves and this bug came swimming out of them. At first I thought it was mosquito larvae and was going to let the discus eat it, but I noticed it looked more sinister and took it out.

Anyone know what it is? If I have more how to get rid of them?

It's hard to tell from the picture, but it looks like it has quite a long body. Could possibly be a dragonfly or damselfly if you have them in your area. Do you have a picture of it that isn't quite so close-up?

I realize this doesn't help so sorry but... EWWWWWW!!!! I would be balling my eyes out right now if I found one of those things in my tank. I would never go near it again. Did you only find the one or is there more? How big was it? Even though I really didn't want to I looked up some pics of dragon fly larva on the net. Looks very simular, Only they appear to be plumper and not have as long stinger things on the butt as yours do. If you can tell us how big they were that might help, it certainly doesn't look like any fish related bug I've ever seen. Good luck with that :S

It was about 1/2 inch long.

Yep, I think mosquito, dragonfly, mayfly are not it.

No, I can't take more pics beause he was squirming too much trying to take these photos, I just put him outide.

I only noticed this one, but when I get home from work, I will do a better search...

I hope disus like to eat them and they aren't harmfull...

It actually looks like damselfly nymph to me. My pond has some of these but were eventually killed by my kribs and angels. I don't believe them to be particularly harmful compared to the dragonfly but I would remove them to be safe anyway.

i used to get flies from my ferret tank stuck in my 10g tank ALL the time. once a week on sunday i would shut the filter off, pick the dead flies off of the intake screen (12 to 15 of them) and feed em to my severums. it was like dessert for them! :D
