Exclamation Brown stuff in my power filter?

My water looked a little like "tea" lately, so I check the filter and it was horrendous. The mouth had this brown algae stuff seeping out of the sponge and the water had a milky film on the surface.
I can take pictures if needed, but not at the moment. (Phone's dead)

The filter is a Whisper 20 Power Filter, and it has been established for a few months now. I've dealt with a little of the brown algae before and washed it off with dirty tank water, but it was never this bad!

 SOMEONE PLEASE HELP!
