Is it a planted tank? Do you dose any ferts? Is the tank in direct sunlight? You want to eliminate the cause of the algae, so we need a few more specifics.

20 gallon long: 3 adult Neolamprologus similis + about 11 fry of various ages; low light planted tank
20 gallon long:2 freshwater dwarf puffers (Puff Puff and Poofer); medium-light planted tank
10 gallon: 1 male betta named Wormy; low light planted tank
10 gallon: 1 male betta named Dante; low light planted tank
2, 5.5 gallon tanks that are currently empty (I see more fish on the horizon )

No only fake plants, I don't know what ferts are, It isn't in direct sunlight,

Also can golden algae eaters eat brown algae?

I wouldn't recomend those. They grow huge, and as they get older, they don't eat algae and get aggresive.

Everything happens for a reason, but the reason isn't always good.

i say since you have no actual living plants shut off the aquarium light for a week. I did this when i had free floating green algea and it cleared it up super fast :P

I left my light off for a day and it seemed that the algea got worse! This might be ironic but, last week we got rid of all our live plants and suddenly a week later we have hardly any brown algea?!?!

jhk, the brown coating is not algae as we know it. it is a diatom, "it feeds" on silcia/silicates. usually these are used up fairly fast and the whole tank is free of them, however the silica can be replenished by water chgs/ makeup water. it can come from your substrate, esp if it is sand, or oranaments. can you fill us in on the afor- mentioned

when the silica is used up it will regress and all will be clean. there is nothing you can do except eliminate any sources of silica. it is harmless. but unsightly.
