So this is a 55g with two 18-inch tubes. I suggest you simply replace the existing tubes with better light. Oldfishlady was cotrrect in my view, daylight/full spectrum around 6500K is good plant light and provides good colour rendition. You may be able to get this size in your local hardware store (Home Depot, Lowe's...), the HD here now has these tubes in the smaller (smaller than 48-inch) sizes. Phillips, Sylvannia or GE daylight around 6500K is fine. You will have no problem with floating plants, guaranteed.
