Honestly I don't think bottom feeders are necessary. I think they're a fish you should only get if you like the fish itself.
Food should never make it to the bottom of the tank if you're feeding properly.
If you feel like you need a clean up crew, get Nerite snails. They're the bomb and do a great job cleaning, and can't breed in fresh water. They also come in a large array of various patters and shells.

Guppies are as good at bottom feeding as any catfish. They will find every scrap of food that reaches the sand. But as jentralala said, if you feed correctly there is lttle need for scavengers unless you like the fish.
