Bottom feeders to keep tank population down?

When I was at the LFS the lady pointed at some type of fish and suggested I get at least one at some point. She said, you will want something like that to keep the population down.

I have Tiger Barbs in my tank thus far and definitely do not want to have 100 of them in my tank. I am wondering how others keep the population under control? I never had that problem with my Goldfish. I don't know if they never had babies or they ate the fry themselves or what?

Aquarium
If your Tiger Barbs do lay eggs more than likely they will be eaten before they hatch.

150 Gallon - Mostly American Cichlids
135 Gallon - Angelfish Community
75 Gallon - Odd couple (Polleni/Angelfish)
55 Gallon - African tank
20 Gallon Long - QT
10 Gallon - Empty
