Question Beginner's question

Hi all,

About a month and a half ago my wife and I inherited two fish, one is a kind of goldfish with bulging eyes and another one looks very similar to this:

We've got a 20 gallon tank with filter and the oxygen thing... We feed the fish once a day.

Everything seems fine except the barb fish now tends to spend all the time sleeping in a "castle" ornament we put in. Even when we put food in, you have to "wake up" this fish by tapping on the glass...

Is this normal behavior?

Question 2: Is it normal for the goldfish to almost always be hyper active and often "polish" the gravel?

Thanks in advance.

20 gallons aren't gonna be enough for the pop eye goldfish when it gets big and as for the other fish a group of them is advisable.but they may nip at your goldfish as they are of the barb family. i say may as not all barbs are nippers.

Ok, thanks. I took some pictures (link below) and have a couple of follow-up questions...

What temperature should I keep the tank at (I purchased a thermometer and a heater)?
Looking at the photo of the barb (link below) can someone tell me what sex it is, so that I can get an opposite sex companion for it? Alternatively is a better idea to get another same sex barb?

Thanks!

That's no barb. It's a Blue Gourami or maybe Opaline Gourami and it will most certainly be too big for that 20g the same as the goldfish.

I'd get the goldfish it's own tank or find someone with an appropriate pond who would take it. I'd definitely get another tank for the gourami. Something like a 50g, where, with some research you could find several other fish that would work with this one. Then you can keep the 20g for a different setup or get rid of it.

30g SE Asian Tank
15 Lambchop Rasbora
2 Gold White Cloud Minnows
3 Dwarf Chain Loaches
2 Powder Blue Dwarf Gourami

55g Amazon Tank
2 Wild Type Angels
1 Marble Angel
1 Black Angel
1 Koi Angel
2 Bolivian Rams
14 Pristella Tetra
10 Dwarf Pencilfish
2-3 Twig Catfish (to come)

Don't think we can manager a bigger (or multiple) aquariums in the near future.

Give the two fish combo, any suggestions on the ideal temperature? Thanks.

There's not really an ideal temp for those two fish. Gouramis are SE Asian and tropical in the sense that they require temps in the 70s the way most of the fish we think of as belonging in aquariums do. Goldfish are a type of carp and do much better in the 60s. You surely know people who, at least in some regions of the country, keep their koi and goldfish in outdoor ponds all year. I'd try and rehome them both and find something appropriate for the tank.

Looks to be Odessa barb or Two Spot barb, Certainly not a Gourami. Temp around 74 or 75 degrees would suit both.
Am more concerned with whether the aquarium has cycled. If not,, then please read about the process of cycling a new aquarium or the nitrogen cycle in aquariums.
If tank has not cycled,,then daily to every other day water changes of 40 to 50 percent with fresh dechlorinated water (see PRIME water conditioner) will be needed along with very controlled feeding if fishes are to survive.

The most important medication in your fish medicine cabinet is.. Clean water.

Did you take a look a the photobucket link to the actual fish posted a little ways down 1077, or just the first photo?

I'm pretty sure it's a gourami.

Computer won't let me access the photobucket . I was going from the first photo in thread. My bad
If the fish is indeed Gourami, then they and goldfish don't share same temp requirements and onre or the other should be returned.
