beginner confused about mulm

i read that you are supposed to vacuum your substrate with every water change

then my sister got me "Ecology of the Planted Aquarium" for my birthday and it says you are not supposed to vacuum the substrate in a planted aquarium, because mulm fertilizes the live plants...

i am confused...

what is your opinion on this and why?

You don't necessarily have to vacuum your substrate with every water change.

If the tank is heavily planted you may not have to vacuum at all, just to get excess mulm buildup around plants. You are right though, the mulm does fertilize the plants.

If it is semi-planted, then I would still vacuum occasionally, but just skim the top around the plants so you don't disturb the roots.

i agree- just let it accumulate a little bit right around the base of the plants. (but i would try to vac out the rest...too much isn't good..)
