Balancing Sump System

Oye - I built my sump, and I added water to it and my tank. Pretty much everything works fine.

I have but one remaining problem: balancing the intake, the outtake, and the volume of water in my sump.

The tank is 72 gallons. The sump is set up in a 20 long. The tallest plate of glass is aprox 8.5" up, so my sump is 30"x12.5"x8.5". My filter pump is 420 gph. How much water do I need to keep down in my sump?

I cannot get the calculation quite right. In the mean time, I'll just keep removing water from the tank.

Thanks for your help. I did try my own research, but I was unsuccessful.
