As long as he is BIGGER than the biggest mouth in the tank... and you don't have any "bullies" in the tank. (Crayfish, Catfish, Siamese and Chinese Algae eaters, (who don't always eat algae and can be mean)).

Thank you for the lovely comments. Believe me - I didn't do anything special but, if it helps, my water parameters are:
KH = 3/4
PH = 5.5
GH = 9
Nitrites and Ammonia at 0
Nitrates = 5/10
I change 10% water every Thursday (not that the day matters
) and hoover the gravel and feed at lights on time only:
1 NovoTab (JBL); a few shrimp pellets, and a sprinkle of Tetramin Junior.
He seems to have survived on the pickings that have floated into the moss. I have loads of plants, an oxygen bubbler but removed the CO2 once the plants became self-sufficient.
Otherwise it's down to good luck. Keep trying - you never know.
