Articles on bacteria and hardness/pH

If you're like me, you rarely if ever take a look at the Freshwater Article section, so this post is simply to make you aware of two new articles. Both happen to have been authored by me, but I hope that won't detract from their usefulness.

Last week or whenever I posted one to explain the relationship between hardness and pH in freshwater. And today I posted one on Bacteria and the Nitrogen Cycle. Both topics come up regularly in threads, so it made sense to me anyway to consolidate the information in a reference tool that can now be referred to or linked in posts.

There are 2 or 3 successive posts to these to get around the auto text limitation.

The aquarist is one who must learn the ways of the biologist, the chemist, and the veterinarian. [unknown source]

Something we all need to remember: The fish you've acquired was quite happy not being owned by you, minding its own business. If you’re going to take it under your wing then you’re responsible for it. Every aspect of its life is under your control, from water quality and temperature to swimming space. [Nathan Hill in PFK]
