Pure Silicon works, in other words stuff that has no anti mold etc... additives.

Agree. Do not use anything else, it will likely have chemicals that are toxic. Aquarium silicone is safe, though more expensive. If you can find a pure silicone in a hardware store, it would be OK. They will usually say on the label if it is safe for an aquarium (or not).

GE Silicone I (Clear)
Window/Door/Attic/Basement is AQUARIUM safe even though it does not say so on the label.

GE stopped adding aquarium safe to a lot of their silicones as they now contain mold and fungicide. GE 1 Window / Door /Attic /Basement DOES NOT contain any of these.

I have used it a million times in my tanks and never once had a fish die on me and had the water chemically tested by a friend who is a chemist..nothing showed up at all associated with anything the silicone was made from.

Coral putty is another option which is widely used as well for holding things together with no adverse effects.
