Apple Snails now banned in Europe

The EU Commission has passed legislation banning the importation and captive breeding of all Apple Snails. This applies to all countries of the European Union. More info in the linked article.

This unfortunate development is due to the presence of this snail in natural waterways. It is assumed this occurred due to negligence on the part of aquarists who allowed these invertebrates to get into the natural habitat. Another reason never to "flush" or discard aquarium residents that are still alive.

The aquarist is one who must learn the ways of the biologist, the chemist, and the veterinarian. [unknown source]

Something we all need to remember: The fish you've acquired was quite happy not being owned by you, minding its own business. If you’re going to take it under your wing then you’re responsible for it. Every aspect of its life is under your control, from water quality and temperature to swimming space. [Nathan Hill in PFK]
