Well, Oliver and I just got back from the pet shop. We went directly to the fish section as I was looking for some more plants. They are supposed to get their shipments in late Wednesday so I tend to look on Thursdays when I can for the best selection. I got there just as the gal had just scooped out a dozen feeder Goldfish for another woman and her child.
I asked the woman what she was feeding those to? She said, "Oh, we are going to put them in our classroom tank, we are setting it up today" I said, "oh, you don't have it set up yet?" I then was able to at least talk her into a bunch of plants, some Prime and give her a quick coaching session on care. I also told her that the goldfish would soon be too big for her 40 gallon tank, especially 12 of them. She was incredibly thankful that I told her these things and the gal that worked there was all of a sudden coming up with all these products that she should buy. I wonder if they work on commission?
While she was madly hunting the shelves for more, I was able to tell the lady to disregard those products and keep it simple. Prime, water changes, keep a close eye on water parameters.
Sadly, she did keep the goldfish and said they give them away at the end of the school year. Parents set tanks up in wait for their new fish. At least I was able to let her know that there was more to be learned and that she could teach the kids a better way to care for fish. Hopefully, she will continue to research on her own. She seemed like she would.
