Ammonia Meter Malfunctioning?

So I've got that thing in my tank that constantly measures ammonia levels. I set up my tank on November 13 and I have 3 male bettas in it (divided 10 gallon). It didn't show any change by 6 days so I did a 50% water change. Now, 3 days later, it's showing alert (5 percent ammonia).

Whats going on?

10 Gal. Divided Tank:
Bright orange Male VT Betta - Buckethead
Blackish body with turqoise and red-orange tail Male CT Betta - Suicune

Other Pets:

  • 2 cats - Stinker(M)and Smudge(F)
  • 1 Syrian Hamster - Rocky (M)

Do a water test.

.... I'm probably drunk.

This is how I lurk

I've heard though that a 50% water change once a week should be okay...

I've only had the tank since November 13 and I did my first water change on Friday. The ammonia meter today though looks normal. Idk....
