Alkalinity?

Hi I was wondering what alkalinity was... Umm from my point of view it is more basic water not acidic... If it is bad please tell me because I have some... Yah no Idea saw it when I checked my water parameters. If it is soft ness or hardness [which I am fairly sure it is not] just tell me. Whatever it is please help me figure it out

Alkalinity refers to the dissolved mineral in the water. And yes, hard water will be alkaline and more so the harder, normally.

Previously we used to speak of "acidic" water (pH below 7) and "alkaline" water (pH above 7), but now the term "basic" is used for pH above 7 since the pH can be above 7 and the water still soft (no or little mineral, so low or no alkalinity).

I prefer to consider hardness (degrees GH for general hardness) as more important with respect to mineral content.

Byron.
