While nothing is a substitute for general tank maintenance, there is a great product called Algone that can be purchased only at LFS. Not a chemical, it's an all natural product, a "plant in a pouch" if you will. Like I said, it will not help if you leave a tank without regular maintenance, but it will help clear up algae or bacterial bloom quickly along with the scrubbing, filter and water change. It might benefit you to give this a try at this point in time.
