African Ciclid Pigmentation

For those who keep africans and understand the significant color fluctuations associated with the behavioral patterns of your fishes I have a question. My "rusty" has bright orange fins and brown bands from nose to tail, when he gets aggresive the oranges stand out and become brighter. Everywhere but right around the mouth and between the eyes. I thought It was a fungus but there is no protrusion or cottony texture and the fish is heathly as far as I can tell. my water chem is fine, I do regular changes, use salt, check ammo and all that stuff, I haven't overstocked the tank and the fish is only about 1.5 inches long the temp is steady at 78. It might be the substrate
