Advice on a 30gallon tank setup

Hi,

This is my first tank I am setting up. I have done a good deal of research, but I would like some opinions before I dive in to buying things. I am getting a 30 gallon tank, and stand used. My plan is to get a Marineland Emperor 280 Filter, and a 100W heater. I am also thinking of adding plants to the mix. I was thinking of getting the following ....

2 x Java Fern
2 x Cryptocoryne Wendtii "red"
2 x Cryptocoryne Retrospiralis
2 x Anacharis or Anacharis narrow leaf
1 x Marimo Ball
1 medium Amazon Sword

Once my cycle is done, I am looking at getting about 6 black skirt tetras, but I am not sure what I should put with them. What are your thoughts? Also if you have any good places to order plants online, I would be happy to look. The options locally are slim to say the least.

Since black skirts are sort of aggressive I would stick to some nippy/active things. I would do the black skirts (raise the school to 8-10), than some glowlight danios (8-10)for some top activity. For the bottom I would do a raphael cat and a pair of bushynose plecs.

Thanks, I will look into those fish. I like the looks of them, but I want to make sure I am not biting off more then I can handle. :)

Well all those fish will get along. So you will be fine. Also look up serpae, black phantom, red phantoms and white finned rosy tetras. They all sort of look like the black skirts but peaceful, so you could expand your options if you choose one of them instead. But the black skirts are fine.

Wait, I though serpaes were more agressive than black skirts tankman?

Tabby, black skirt tetras are not agressive. I would do 8 black skirts, a larger gourami such as the blue or gold, a school of 8 cories of your choice (but please stick with one species!) and a clown or bristlenose pleco. When chosing filters, I would find a sunsun canister filter than does around 10x your tank volume and hour. With the 30 gallon, I would look for around 300gph. As far as the plants, just make sure you have appropriate lighting and they will do fine. A bottle of Seachem Flourish will do you well for ferilizers.

Flint I would love to do a canister filter right now, but I just don't have $100 to spend of the filter. But I might add it my want list for later down the line. Thanks for the suggestions. I will look into the fish you suggested. I love hearing the different combinations that people suggest. :)

Yes black skirts are more aggressive. Serpaes are not even nippy if kept in a good school. Black skirts nip no matter what. Good find jaysee!

Highly untrue. Serpae. while in a proper group are less nippy then when kept in smaller groups there are absolutely more nippy/aggressive then skirt tetras.

there are is a great sunsun for your tank size under $100.. I have a sun sun and do rate it very high for a cheap filter. here is a link
