5gal hex

Along with my current salt project I got a five gallon marineland hex for Christmas and I'm planning to make it a betta tank. I picked up play sand for it yesterday and plan on seeding with water and gravel from my established 20. I picked up a nifty Buddha head ornament from petco that was on sale due to my ancient Indiana jones esque theme jolting into my head upon site. The heater gets here this Friday so I'll probably wash the sand ahead of time as well as soak it's filter media in my twenty. Sorry no pics at the moment but I should e starting this weekend when of which I'll post as Many as I can!

Sounds like it'll be a pretty neat setup. There's really no need to use water from your other tank; the vast majority of beneficial bacterial live on surfaces like the substrate and filter media and aren't free-floating in the water. The gravel will help it seed, though. You can put it in a filter media bag or some pantyhose and set it on top of your substrate in a high-flow area (or put some in your filter, or both).

For seeding, just take your existing filter sponge, 'wash it' out in the 5g till you have some nice "muck" in there and that alone right there is all the bacteria you'll need.

Also I planned on putting some MTS snails into it from my 20 gallon's probably million or so occupancy...who knows how many are in there o.o But i figured they'd be good for aerating the sand. Also i'm wondering if i could keep any other inhabitant in there? Preferably a shrimp? Just not sure if a betta would get along so well with one.

It depends. Some bettas are completely docile when it comes to shrimp and others will try to kill and eat them. You could experiment with a ghost shrimp and see what happens. If he lives, your betta is probably safe around other types of shrimp. If the betta eats him...well, you just fed him a nice $0.25 gourmet snack.

Yeah good idea. Thank you! I was hoping to keep a bamboo shrimp in there I think.

Try your Betta there with Ghost shrimp. Mine doesn't touch them at all. Maybe add a lil Java moss or any other fine plant for them to hide if they needed to and you're set

Still have a couple more days before I start to be honest. The 5 gallon I'm waiting to setup with my girlfriend actually which were both aiming to have time for this weekend. But I'll at least take this quick one with the phone for an idea...theres the ornament i was talking about and a 50 watt stealth pro heater (it's the same length as the 25 watt i intended to buy and I found the 50 on sale for the same price as the 25) I've got play sand i picked up waiting outside to be washed as well and java fern will come from my existing 20. I also plan on cutting the styrofoam base it came on to stand it up on. It seems like it sits unstable as is.
