55 gallon tank - starting over

Long story short - my 55gallon tank now sits empty and I'm going to take things slow and easy before I add fish.

I bought some plants today and I'm working through setting up my tank to be a beginner low tech (meaning no CO2) tank. I'm going to confirm that my tank is cycled too by doing a fishless cycle as I have never read any nitrites/nitrates on the tank.

This is going to be fun and interesting.

P.S. I found someone willing to take the fish, QT them, and they will be placed in a display tank at a special needs hospice

Good way to go. With plants, you do not need to "cycle" a tank, as the plants, once established (growing) will handle the ammonia. When you have it planted, you can add some fish; depending upon what they are, a few if small or just one or two. And increase the fish every couple of days. With sufficient plants and the right type and number of fish you will have no problems whatsoever.
