I looked at the Firemouth profile and got some good information but was wondering if the 46g would be enough room.

For a single fish, or a pair (male/female), yes. I would not try a group unless the tank is 4 feet in length. [This is mentioned in the profile, under the Minimum Tank section.]

There are some possible tankmates, substrate fish would be OK.

My 46g bow is 36 inches long. I have a bristle nose that I plan on putting in there and was thinking about getting some kind of cory. But the firemouths, I was hoping to just get a pair and that's it.
