Definitely liking Hoplosternum thoracatum for the 55 gal. It says they get up to 7 inches so they definitely would be too big for the 29. However this changes the game as to what I can keep with them. From what I read they are very peaceful and get along with anything thats too big to swallow, and their mouths are actually rather small so I think some of the larger gourami's might still be alright with them. I also rather like ropefish or reedfish, but have read they are great escape artists and I do not know how this larger tank is set up so I will have to wait and see about that.

Be careful with nocturnal fish (like the Hoplo) with quiet diurnal fish like gourami...

Hmm I hadn't considered that. I will read more into that. The 55 gal is really up in the air as I am not sure if I what exactly I am even getting with the tank. As far as I know I'll have to buy all the filters and such and chances are I will only be able to do one over the other for a bit. Considering I also have all the stuff for the 29 gal its likely going to be that one for now anyway. But its fun to plan ahead :D

Ropefish are a social creature that get really long, can eat small fish, and will not do well in a 55 gallon tank. Some people may try to tell you that "Well you can keep one" but that is quite cruel when you think about it. Why not consider instead Peacock Eel for your 55 gallon? Going to reiterate what someone else said but add a caution. There is not an Eel out there that can live happily in your 29 gallon tank.

Thanks for the advice on the ropefish. I suppose that rules them out for the 55 then. I don't think I could have secured the top of the tank very easily either and I have heard they are notorious escape artists anyway. And yes I have decided against the eel for the 29 gal.

So far I am thinking after some revised thought
For sure:
4 - Honey or Thick Lipped Gouramis
6-8 Kuhli Loaches
Possible: (other options, I am by NO means saying all of these plus the above. Just ideas for other possible tank mates).
2-3 Golden wonder Killifish
6 otto
1-2 rubber nose pleco?
4 Platy

Really I am open to any other colorful or active suggestions. I'd like cory cats but I'm worried that would make the bottom far too over crowded so that's not likely. If anyone could recommend some other small catfish I'd appreciate it!
