Question 25g Ideas

I was recently given a 25g cube type glass aquarium and I would like some stocking ideas. My boyfriend finds freshwater fish to be very dull and so I would like to find something that is going to be colorful and flashy. I was thinking maybe peacock gudgeon and something else. Anyone have any ideas? I want something that isn't going to be difficult to maintain and also will live awhile. I really thought about some rainbowfish or Killifish but they just don't sound like they live very long.

Welcome to the forum and the hobby. Helping people stock tanks seems to be one of the things we do best around here.

First off before you begin stocking we will need to know your local water parameters like pH, GH (general hardness), and KH (calcium hardness). You can call your local water treatment plant to get these or you can find them online. In the US, the EPA requires cities to release water quality reports; these often have what we need. We ask this because some fish can only live in soft or hard water and some (while they can live in both) will live longer in one or the other.

PS. If your boyfriend doesn't think freshwater fish can be vibrant, take a look at this article from PFK. Looks like the pH around here varies by which section of the city you live in. My section is 8.1 but it goes from 7.3-8.2 depending where you are. I looked all over and could not find anything about GH or KH and the woman I called has yet to call me back. But perhaps the pH is at least a start. I

PH is a start, but it isn't always the best indicator. I have soft water, but my pH is 7.5. Can you find your local hardness online?

I have checked everywhere and cannot find the hardness of the water here, it is ridiculous.
