So i just picked up a 55 Gal to upgrade from my 20 gal. The 20 gal has been up and running for a year w/o any problems i have 3 golden barbs 4 tiger barbs and 3 odesa barbs. I have taken half the gravel out of the 20 gal and put in into the 55. I want to use as much of the 20 to set up and jump start the 55. i need some advice on what to do next. the 55 is filled and been running for 2 days just tested amonia 0ppm nitrite 0ppm ph 7.8 nitrate 0ppm
Move the filter from your 20 gallon and run it along with the new filter on the 55. The 20 gallon filter has enough bacteria to support the fish bioload you currently have so you can move all your fish over to the 55.. Monitor your water daily for the next week or two but you should be fine. This is what I did when I upgraded from a 20 to the 55. I didn't see any minicycle. Just don't add any new fish for a few weeks until you're sure the parameters are stable.
Duh, I totally forgot the filter!! Honestly I don't know where my brain is going! Yes, all the above advice is great, don't mind my stupidity.
