20 gallon tank new fish owner

I have 1 jack dempsey in it.
I want semi-aggressive fish, if I get rid of the jack dempsey and get a school of tiger barbs what can I put with them that are okay size and semi aggresive?

Your Jack Dempsey needs to be rehoused, as it grows much too large for a 20 gallon. Is this a 20 gallon long or high? Tiger Barbs are usually recommended to be kept in groups of 8 or more in at least a 30 gallon tank. You may be able to pull it off, but why risk it at the expensive of the fish. Look into Serape Tetra. They are somewhat aggressive and have beautiful coloration IMO. You could try like 8 of them with a few Cory Cats.

If you get rid of the jack damsey (which I think would need a bigger tank once full grown anyways) and put barbs in, I would think if you wanted to add more fish you might need some bottom dwellers. I keep 6 barbs, and they have not had an issue with any fish I have kept with them so I think as long as your not over doing the bioload, or getting fish that will grow too big most anything should be good.

I am getting some Cory fish for my 20 maybe look into those?

I keep a couple of kribensis cichlids with my tiger barbs. They can handle themselves without any problems against a gang of tiger barbs.
