Hi, I'm wondering if it's possible to cycle a 2.5 gallon tank. I was just given one, and would love to use it for 1 betta on my bedside table. I had put a spare filter in a cycled tank, and thought putting that in the little tank might do the trick. Am I wasting my time?
Also, how long will the spare filter need to be in the cycled tank before it grows BB? Thanks!!
Do you have a filter? I also have a 2.5 betta tank and it is filtered. My betta has lived for over a year and it only takes a few weeks to cycle. Weekly water changes also help when you get your fish.
Yes, I do have a filter. I cycled
My 10& 20 gallon tanks, but have been told you can't cycle a tank under 5 gallons. I'm hoping that isn't true. Is your 2.5 cycled?
Yes, you let it sit for a few weeks. And I haven't been told I can't because I did independent research so, no one has told me. And I found it isn't true.
Many Bettakeepers on the BF side of the forum run stable, cycled 2.5g tanks. I've had several in the past. They are easily cycled and maintained, especially when seeded with live bacteria.
OceanSpirit's estimate of a few weeks to transfer bacteria is about right.
A weekly 50% water change will help reduce nitrate, dilute dissolved waste, replace minerals and stabilize pH.
Live plants are also great. Make a little jungle in there for your Betta.
i agree with Hallyx.especially when using seeded material.i like to go to my established aquariums and rub a new filter onto an established filter as well as taking a little bit of gravel and hanging in the side of the tank in a stocking(ladies pantyhose) for a week or 2.i keep track of water levels just to be safe..also with a tank that small watch the water heater..especially the ones that are submersible like the little flat water bowl heaters and the non adjustable heaters..using the spare filter you have stated will work perfectly..also i like to baffle my filter by placing a sponge at the outlet to slow down water flow as bettas are too excited about high water flow. hopefully i didnt step on anyone and repeat anything.
