14 Gallon stocking ideas

Figured I'd jump on the "what should I do with my tank" wagon. Its a 14 gallon, has the same dimensions as a 10 gal. but taller (16" to be exact) Its currently empty with no water substrate or decor. That will change soon. It has a florescent light, glass canopy, heater and a Penguin 150. Im looking for something different than my 45 gal. community. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated .

Make it a shrimp or crayfish tank. A tank full of CPOs would look very nice. Or a huge Cherax with some danios swimming above would be cool as well.

Thanks for your response! Forgive me but I am unfamiliar with CPO's or Cherax. I assume they are some kind of shrimp?

Im thinking a betta, some white clouds or galaxy rasboras, maybe some dwarf corys if not some shrimp and/or snails. Hows that sound?

Shrimp will be eaten by the Betta. How about this -

1 Male Betta
10 Galaxy Rasboras
6 Dwarf Cories or Dwarf Chain Loach
3 Nerite Snails (come in different patterns)
15 or so ghost shrimp (again, likely to be food)

If you pick the loach instead of the cory, you can't have the nerites, but other than that, switch your lights and plant it maybe? Options are endless.

Wow thats alot! lol Dunno if I agree with the shrimp becoming food cuz my gf had a 2 gal. betta tank with 2 shrimp and the betta never bothered them, though I think they were a little bigger than ghosts. I didnt even consider live plants. Thats def an option. What plants wont overtake my tank? Aside from lighting do I need special substrate?

You don't need special substrate, just some fertilizer. Many say root feeders need root tabs but I have a 2.5 gallon that sits near a window (not lighted or filtered) and it's been up for a good 3 months only having been dosed one time with liquid ferts and my crypts are growing like mad. The plants won't take over the tank if you trim them.

The shrimp will really depend on the personality of the betta, some will leave them alone, others won't. I personallly don't have shrimp with my Betta but ever since the death of my Nerite, I've wanted to get some ghost shrimp to help the plants with the algae. Plants will GREATLY increase the chances of keeping shrimp with the Betta.

I keep Java Fern and Crypts. My Java Fern lines the back of my tank, there's a large piece of driftwood in the middle, and the Crypts run down the side. I got all of my plants at Petsmart. The Crypts actually came in a bag instead of those tubes. Also, my substrate is sand.

Just got home from the lfs. They had 2 tanks set up with both with shrimp and bettas in them. Im liking this idea. The store was too busy to ask about the care and necessities of keeping shrimp. Anything special I need to know?

In my experience dwarf crayfish (CPO) will cannibalize each other if there are too many, so I wouldn't do a tankfull. Too, the footprint of a 10 gallon is no where near big enough for a full size crayfish (cherax), let alone anything "huge".... nor is the footprint of a 10 gallon appropriate for a school of danios. I agree though, that it is cool....in a larger tank, like a 29.

125 - BGK, chanchito cichlid, pictus cats, silver dollars, palmas bichir
125 - cichlids (severums, bolivian rams, chocolate), rainbows ( turquoise, red), loaches (angelicus, zebra, kuhli and horseface), plecos (BN, RL and clown), denison barbs, tiretrack eel, pearl gouramis, betta
90 - Congo tetras, african knife, upside down cats, spotted ctenopoma, kribensis, delhezzi bichir
2.5 - betta
