Most of the stem plants will float freely. For a betta, an authentic floating plant is Ceratopteris ( Water Sprite, floating fern). It develops numerous daughter plants on the leaves, and these can be removed and will quickly grow and produce daughter plants... etc. I just pull out the largest Ceratopteris plants when I do the weekly partial water change, removing a few of the small daugthter plants, and from week to week I have much the same cover in the tank. The trailing roots are a haven for bubblenest builders (betta, gourami) and a constant grazing ground for minute food bits. Very natural.
