What kind of plant is this?!

It looks just like the Java Moss I have in my tank. I haven't had too much luck with mine spreading either.

looks like its browning out, lighting too strong? are you dosing ferts? positive it is an aquatic plant?
my Java Moss doesnt grow fast, but it def. grows

My Java Moss looks just like Atticus27's. Is it because I have high lighting and that I dose with ferts? Maybe it's one of those plants that thrives on neglect?? Or I have it placed too far up in the tank under the lighting and I should put it closer to the bottom? I've been trying to grow it on top of a piece of driftwood and it's not really happening...

It looks like Java Moss and it will do well as long as the lighting is even half what you would think and the water is kept moving around it. I have some growing in lighting as low as 1 WPG with no fertilizers and as high as 2.5 WPG with daily doses of fertilizers. The ferts are not for the Java Moss.
I think I have read that excel is bad for them. That is a solution that you can use on some plants instead of using CO2.

That explains my complete & total failure at trying to grow Java Moss. Hopefully this isn't true of all mosses as I'm now attempting to do a moss wall out of Christmas Tree moss???

wait, i don't get it, so what am I doing wrong? I hvae the light on about 8-12 hrs per day.

Atticus: What type of lighting do you have and are you using ferts??

What I've understood from the prior posts by others is that Java Moss does not like ferts or high lighting. I don't think it's the amount of *time* the lights are left on but rather the *strength* (or rating) of the lights. I gather that Java Moss is a plant with little to no requirements in order to thrive and obtain good growth? Is that correct, guys??

12 hours a day is too long for a freshwater tank. i wouldnt exceed 8 personally. 6-8 hours a day should be plenty.
