They will base their opinions on their findings, they will then repeat the test for validity, and then publish their findings in a scientific journal.
When sufficient scientific evidence is their which backs up their theory, im willing to try it out to see if it works, and so far, all of tom barrs method have worked for me, and the other 3000 or so UKAPS members, so therefore, that would strongly suggest that it is fact. Within the next few years someone may come up with a new theory which would seem preposterous, then the process happens again.
The whole nitrates and phosphates causing algae thing; when someone suggested it couldn't possibly be correct, they were shot down for it, they tried it, published their findings, repeated it, then others tried it with positive results, then their theory was accepted, and it is accepted as being correct.
