sand vs eco

Sorry, no. I bought a black sand called "Caribsea tahitian moon" from Petsmart.
I have read of others purchasing sandblasting sand, which is less expensive and can be found in black. Some posts indicate the sand-blasting sand has industrial slag as a component. I don't personally know one way or the other.

Have been using 20/40 black diamond blasting media found at tractor supply for a year now in a couple tank's.
Read a ton of post's on planted tank forum's before trying it, and those that use it have had no issues,including me.
50 lb bag goes for around eight bucks in my neck of the wood's.

Coal slag.

That's interesting.
I don't know what the black sand I bought was. It turned into foam when I washed it, back to sand when it dried.

Thanks 1077, I did some research and the coal slag's an inert by-product of burning coal. Considered environmentally safe and non-reactive. Think of it as like a "black glass". $8 for 50lbs locally for me also, so I'm going to try it some time. Abrasive, since it's sold as an abrasive(!), but I'll use it in a tank without cory's. I think the term "slag" was throwing me off.
