Hey guys and gals! I am new here and I thought it would be a good idea to introduce some of you to a new type of aquascape, Ripariums! For starters, riparium comes from the latin work
ripa- which means "river bank" so a riparium is a recreation of a river bank. Hobbyist use small Planters filled with a substrate with a marginal/bog or emmersed aquatic plant growing out of it. The planter is then put into a normal aquarium so that the roots of the plant are underwater. The planter is then attatched to the wall of the aquarium using either suction cups, or magnets. Since the plant's roots are in the aquariums water column, the plant receives nutrients from it, and also acts as a nitrate sponge. Hobbyists also use floating foam Rafts with plants such as
Pilea spp. growing out of holes in the foam. The rafts attatch to the Planters to keep them in place using Mushroom head fasteners. Again, the roots of the plants are in the water column which is where it recieves its nutrients. Ripariums are very easy to setup and to change at will! Most ripariumnists have the water level in their tanks lower then normal and without hoods as this would inhibit the growth of the plants. I highly suggest
