After getting some advice on here I have decided to restructure my tank. I took out the massive bit of bog wood that was on the right and decided to just keep the bonsai tree on the left as the focal point. Saw some advice somewhere about perfect placement of main focus peices and it should be just off centre to the left.

Anyways part way through the water change I was doing today I decided to also split up the massive clump of hairgrass I had to spread it out properly. It is starting to come together now.

What do you think?

Waiting patently for the picture. :) I am looking for ideas as well. My tank is going to be getting a huge re-do allso. I am going to change the substrate completely and replant. Also, Am thinking of taking out some of the wood. Can't wait to see what you do.

This is a purely asthetic comment; I would move both bits of "wood" out more, just a bit, and not evenly on both sides.

Looks good! I would move something closer like Byron said. What are the plants in the back with long stems but broad leaves?

When you say 'out' do you mean bring them inwards towards the middle of the tank?

The stem plants are a type of Amazon Sword but I cannot remember the name of them. I need something midground though to cover up the stems. I really want to have hills and that rather than just a flat surfac ebut I really cant figure out how people do them. I mean, if its rock piled up and substrate poured over them so the plants grow that must cost a fortune.

Also I have a bit of a hair and staghorn algae problem going on at the moment. Tried to remove all the leaves its happening to but it hasnt killed it off yet. Got some true sae (which I love anyway) but they dont seem to eat the stag even though I read they do. Seems the only way to get rid of stag is to keep cutting off the leaves its attached to.

But thanks again for your input, any more would be welcome and some advice on the problems mentioned above would be great....thanks all :O)

From what I can see in the photos, there is no algae problem I would be bothered by.

Yes, I use rock to build terraces for deeper sand and gravel. Sometimes the substrate shifts over time, and if the rock is not well fitted together it slowly evens out. The wavy as opposed to flat substrate can be created by wire or egg crate (I think this was mentioned) under it. Otherwise it will even out with normal water movement through the substrate.

By "out" yes, I mean move the wood out from the corners, but unevenly. As is it looks like a frame, if that makes sense. The rectangle is more obvious, but placing the wood out a bit and one piece further out than the other would lessen the rectangular perception.
