Ms Alzheimer you prop forgotten...but you can indeed trim plats WHILE they're planted. I do that every week; have to; otherwise I'd have no light in the 45g ever...just hold the stem and pinch it at X height with your nails and stick the pinched off piece in the gravel

Funny you know I actually up to a year ago indeed did this kinda stuff with fancy Presentations and Cars etc for a living and as a volunteer job (for the Army)?! So it was somewhat for adults...somewhat for kids
I pers don't think I'd be patient enough for some job like Stephanie, or me myself having 10 kids - But all my friends & family kids sure LOVVEEE hanging out at my house any chance they get and we always have a blast; but they also never back talk to me in way they would to their parents and simply respect a no being a NO in my house despite the fun stuff....

Believe me, parents bring out the worst in kids. I hate to put it bluntly. It's just how it be!

Edit: oops forgot the whole point of the thread: So Natalie, my nails aren't sharp enough to, say, prune my Java Fern with just my nails. can't I just put a pair of scissors in the tank and do the job?

That's prop the reason the SECOND our family and their 5 kids cross the TN state line (they're from FL) the kids wind up at my house *magically* just like that...but I love them all so I don't mind.

I think a couple of people posted a map. I know that Lisa did. I am not in the total beginning stage anymore. I have several plants in already, and I am on my second round of plants on order. Making maps is like taking notes to me. LOL I am a HORRIBLE note taker. And to think that I was a legal secretary for 8 years! I am one of those where if I cannot see the texture or colors and heights, etc. live, the drawing won't help me. I have to put it in the tank and look. It could be I am just a little lazy about drawing a plan. I think even if I did, I would still need to place and look and place and look. I had it in my head somewhat at least before the plants arrived. The first batch was to get an idea of what type of plants I like, but some of them did work.

I bet you were good at it. :) Also, I bet the kids do love being around you. Kids do need boundaries.

I like kids and love having my own, but not sure if being a teacher would have been the best for me. I used to want to be one when I was younger. My mom was a 2nd grade school teacher (before we were born) and she always thought I would be good at it. I became an aerobic instructor for 26 years on the side of my main job so that was my feel of teaching, but of course with adults. I really miss it and enjoyed it, but the candle biz got in the way and it was time to close that page of my life, I guess. Still cannot believe I am not doing it anymore. Still love the music though!

That what I do. I have a pair of small scissors with really long blades that I use for pruning.

I have to use scissors too. I have nails but not long or sharp, and I find when I try to pinch some stems off it moves the roots out of the gravel since they are not well planted in yet. I also have a long tool for my 56 gallon if I don't feel like reaching way down in. I is for aquariums and has scissors at the end. It works great, so far.

You could always take a picture (or 2-3 pic) of the existing set up and sep your plants out in it and we can move them around on paper with ya?

I donno I think the biggest reason for the success in my job till I quit it and the kids is simple: Make learning entertaining & fun; It never mattered if I had a room full of adults about a Tech matter or a yard full of kids - If it ain't FUN & entertaining you don't wanna listen and you wanna let your mind trail off and do something else (often with kids that means trouble of some sort lol)
I actually had 3 of our computer customers ask me recently if I would offer classes (like how to use programs and edit pictures etc)and I may really consider going ahead and do that...we'll see...


Steph: Then you need more calcium in your personal diet Meanwhile scissorswork...just be sure you have no pleco hiding under the very leaf you wanna cut ok!?

Did you wash them or anything first? I'll def sterilize with vinegar before using but some scissors have oils and stuff. just wondering.
