Byron, I am still curious: how many inches above your ten gallon do you hang the cfls?

The light fixture sits on the tank frame. It is actually one of those manufactured hoods for a 10g with the light included, but it is just above the water surface (separated by a piece of glass obviously).

Oh really? So you actually found a ten gallon hood with 2 regular bulb sockets, or is it custom made?

They're standard. I got it at Petsmart I think; basic incandescent hood (it has two bulb sockets).

I use those incandescent hoods too... Just don't put incandescent in them.

a 10W CFL (40W equivelent) is only a 10 watt bulb. It's as bright as a 40w incandescent. It can get confusing

I think I might just stick with my dome lights, since those things are $23. I can find one later for $5 at a yard sale.

I've got the 10W 6500K GE CFLs now, so we'll see what happens with my new Flourish Comp. only regiment. I haven't added Excel in a week or so.
