Hi, i got some plants the other day, the name is stricta blue, not too sure on the scientific name though. Well anyway, they are growing roots out all over then from like, the main trunk-ish section. Does this mean i can cut them below the roots and re-plant them?

Also my tank came with a carbon cartridge, is this bad for a tank with plants? if so is there anything to replace it with? or just get rid of it all together?

Can you take a picture by any chance? That name rings me no bell, which doesn't mean too much, if again like its happened a lot recently its another non-aquatic plant.

I take out the carbon on all my tanks unless I use meds. Reason being with the carbon when its new it'll filter some of the nutrition out of the water that the plants need to thrive, so essentially you're taking their food away. That said Carbon only is active for like few weeks; so if you're has been there let's say half a year then its not actively working anymore anyway, so you can just leave that old pad in there itll its falling apart.

And that is an aquarium plant right? Where all the roots are growing out from it, can i cut it and re-plant it? or not?

You can, or you can leave it for now. Stem plants grow in length and some will readily send out side shoots, like this plant has done. Any of the stems or side shoots can be cut off and will root in the gravel as new plants. The stem plants usually have to be trimmed and cut like this regularly to keep them busy and looking good, else the lower leaves may come off and not look so nice. Roots will appear all along the stems of many plant species like this, they assimilate nutrients from the water, so the roots don't have to be planted in the gravel if that was what you were wondering about.

I always let my Hygro's grow out some till they almost reach the tank's top and then start trimming and replanting.
