They come in less wattage that gives light intensity comparable to the standard bulbs, and also less heat and use less energy. [It might be the heat as much as light that is burning your JF, I had this in an amphibian setup with JA in the water part.]
The CF come in various colours of white, like warm white, cool white, intense white. Rhonda Wilson who authors the monthly plant feature in TFH says these bulbs are good for plants if you have incandescent fixtures.
