Java Moss

I am looking to add Java Moss to my aquarium and was wondering if it was a good idea. At the moment i don't know my water ph and hardness and other factors but I have a lot of light and the temperature is always 79 or 80 degrees Fahrenheit. I was also planning on putting the moss on the log in the picture below and have it spread across, does anyone know how long that would take or the best way to attach it? The log is 30+ inches and this is a 55 gallon tank.


If Java Moss wouldn't be good can anyone tell me different plants that would have a similar effect?

Java Moss should work. I now have it on every piece of wood in all 7 tanks, and it originally came with one or more of the original pieces of wood. It can be slow to establish, but once it is settled it will spread to the point of having to be pulled off to thin it from time to time. It also takes a while to acclimate to different conditions, such as changes in light, water parameters.

Sometimes you can get a piece "free" when buying wood, plants or fish; just wedge it onto the wood somewhere, or use black cotton thread. Once placed on the wood, it will begin to root and spread. But as I said, it can be very slow at first.

It does best in less light, by which I mean under the shade of overhanging plants, or floating plants. Out in the open, I find brush algae will appear with it on wood. Depending upon your tank's biology, a liquid comprehensive fertilizer once a week may be needed for nutrients.

I have a 20 gallon with a piece of driftwood in it. I bought Java Moss and although for a long time it was brown and I'm pretty sure that about 1/2 of it was suctioned up the intake tube, it is now very green and growing nicely. It is slowly spreading out on the driftwood. I've had the moss for about 8 months.

will it attach on to rock to

Yes, though if the rock is smooth it may take longer.
