Java Fern Propagation

I've been curious about Java Fern propagation ever since these I think they are call suckers maybe sprouts?!?!? showed up on the leaves of my Java Fern will they fall off when they are ready? or do they have to be harvested? If so when should they be ready?

I just leave mine alone until they detach themselves. The water current will carry them around until they find something to attach to. Although, sometimes they get stuck to the filter intake.

was wondering this myself. the original Java Fern leaves i got are looking a bit tatty after i accidentally planted them in sand, not realising what they were. there was hardly any root on any of them when i got them anyway and thy don't seem to be growing any roots themselves.

they have however got loads of these plantlets growing, i'd like to get rid of the orginal leaves and just grow up the new plants from the plantlets which have good roots already.

I've had leaves that looked ratty tatty but had nice plantlets with leaves. Sure, get rid of the leaves and use your plantlets. It worked for me quite nicely.

Here are some pictures I took of my Java Ferns. I attached then to driftwood with Java Moss with clear fishing line. I also attached them to a flat peice of slate. I also was able to get a rock at the LFS that had holes in it and pushed the fern into the holes of the rock. I have a peice of Java Fern that I put on a rock that had a small crater on the top and just put some of my sand over the roots on top and it;s growing great. I did not post a picture of that one.

When my fern started dying and had tons of shoots on it I just sliced the leaf up into pieces so I wouldn't damage the tiny roots. The leaf pieces quickly disentegrated, leaving the little plantlets in place.

Is 'plantlet' the word you were looking for?

Anyway, I like that pic too. Maybe submit it to the photo contest?

Thanks guys, yea thats the word, I guess I will just let them naturally come off its kind of hard though being the only plant in your tank :)

Redchigh, I submitted my photo of the Red Cherry Shrimp on the driftwood with the Java Fern. Vote for my photo! It's surprising that the phot came out clear because most of the photos I take do not come out really clear and it's hard to take pictures of the fish moving around.
