I have a question about elodea

I have about 10 stems 2"-4" long. Is it suppose to be anchored in the substrate or is it suppose to float around. I have seen it both ways and would prefer if they stay in the gravel. I have tried anchoring them but no roots grow before they get dislodged when I clean the tank.

If you let them flat for a while they will startr to throw out some roots and then you can get them to stay down easier. If you don't want to wait, take the stems and bury them as deep as possible in the substrate and don't gravel vac right around them for a couple weeks. I have also taken them and buried them laying down with some success and sometimes get a lot of new shoots to grow out. Just leave small secitons of it uncovered.

I plant mine on substrate with no roots yet and within a few days, roots formed and anchored the plant firmly.:)

I use elodea as a floater to provide cover for some of my top dwelling fish. I have used it in the past as an anchored plant. Both Lupin and f4a have provided good sound info should you want them anchored.
