On the sand, I think this will improve as the tank matures. Floating plants will help as it diffuses the overhead light. More chunks of wood on the bottom help. A layer of dry leaves is another method. And of course, more plants.  Something like Pygmy chain sword will soon spread.
On the Clown Pleco, i just revised the profile yesterday as it was missing information. The territorial issue is more related to males, I think I may have missed that. I've not kept this particular species of loricariid, but I have kept others. Unless you want the interest of spawning them, a single fish is probably better. But one thing was clear in my research for the profile--this is a very shy fish. One source said if you want a fish you will never see, fine, but otherwise, try something else. Might have been an exaggeration, but...
