I've never gotten into the bio-type setups but, it looks like you've chosen a nice assortment of plants. Like you said, can you have too many ? So far, I've only used Aquariumplants.com to order plants online. It looks like their shipping might be more expensive; however, they offer a wide variety. I'm definitely going to check out your source. Have fun with your new setup !

You asked me to have a look at this list, so here goes. First off, if you are still intending SE Asian geographic, forget the Anacharis [strictly speaking, Elodea], Cabomba, Sagittaria and Oriental (assuming this is a sword, Echinodorus) as these are all New World.

In a 10g I would use crypts, hairgrass may manage, but go easy on stem plants as they will very quickly over-run the small tank. I think it best to have primarily plants that will stay as they are in small quarters, it means less constant thrashing about the aquascape. Floating plants are important, and Water Sprite is SE Asian and it can be controlled better since it is floating.

Hi, Byron! I'm always glad to hear your advice, you're very knowledgeable! So I was wondering if you could clarify for my curiosity- I agree on scratching the elodea and cabomba. (I previously corrected my earliest post about cabomba, saying I meant water milfoil instead. I always get those confused. Milfoil's origin is listed as Eurasia, but I'm not sure exactly where.)
But, anyway, I thought that sagittaria was growing in Asia, though not native. And I thought that there's talk that the Oriental Sword is not of the Echinodorus family at all, and there are thoughts of re-categorizing it. Do you have any info on any of that?

SmallFry, for low to moderate light, I don't know that you could go wrong with 1 or 2 java fern (the ones you already have?), java moss, enough crypts to fill in (get some red/bronze for contrast), floating water sprite, and a bunch of temple hygro (Hygrophila corymbosa) for one corner. Your apon bulbs might work for the other corner, but they'd be pretty big for a 10g. And then one focus plant... something with a contrasting leaf shape and/or color... but I can't think of what.

Its too bad that anubias is African, because that would provide a nice contrast in leaf shape.

I don't know the light requirements for a dwarf lily, Nymphaea stellata, but that could be a nice contrasting focal plant, especially a red variation. I think the rotala group is also from Asia, but that's another stem plant and needs higher lighting, so forget that.

That makes me think... what is your lighting? You said a 18w 6500K, is that a single bulb fixture? And what are you planning for hardscape?

P.S. I took a special interest in your project because you talked about being upset and sad, and wanting to lift your spirits. Aquariums can be great therapy, as you already know! That's why I got back into it, like you. I have a chronic pain condition that I've been struggling with for over two and a half years. And I had gotten pretty depressed. So we're both in a similar boat. I just wanted to let you know that I feel ya, and I'm proud of you for stirring up your happiness again!

I previously forgot Java Fern and Java Moss, thanks Mina. And I did catch your earlier changes, but smallfry had PM'd me and asked me to comment on his specific list in post #10 which includes Cabomba. You wouldn't have known that.

To your specific questions Mina; I have always thought that Sagittaria is naturally confined to the New World, so I had to consult Kasselmann and she confirms this. But she mentions that S. platyphylla has been introduced into western Java (and Italy too). So depending upon the degree of geographic authenticity...

The Oriental Sword appeared in 1994. Kasselmann reports that it is said to have been a spontaneous mutation that appeared during in vitro culture of Echinodorus "Rose" being cultivated in the nursery of Oriental Aquarium Singapore [hence the name "Oriental" for this variety]. E. "Rose" was developed by Hans Barth in 1988 as a cross between E. horizontalis and E. horemanii "red" which itself is a colour form of E. uruguayensis.

All Echinodorus are native to the America's. The alleged "African" species that Rataj describes in his 2005 revision of the genus are not known to exist in Africa. This genus is strictly confined to the New World. I think most would consider any sword developed from one or more Echinodorus species as being "American" [as in North, Central and South America] and out of place in a SE Asian setup.

I am removing the Anacharis, Cabomba, Sagittaria, and Oriental Sword from my stocking list. I agree Byron, any sword just resembles a South American setup, in my opinion, even if it is authentically Asian. Now I need to reconfigure my plant list to a more natural Asian setup.

Did anyone mention Wisteria? I wasn't sure if I needed to move it off the list or not. Also, I didn't see Byron mention the giant hygro? I'd love one of those if they will work.

I think the Aponogeton will be fine. In the past it has grown fairly slowly for me, and I am trying to get a densely planted setup. I have no problem trimming every two weeks or so. In fact, I think that would work nicely. On the same note, hornwort wasn't specifically mentioned (although I know it was referred to). I'd like to purchase a hornwort. I know they grow like wildfire, but like I said, I don't mind the trimming.

How fast will the Crypts and water sprite reproduce? I won't buy as many if they spread at a moderate rate.

Oh, forgot to ask. No hairgrass? I've always been found of the hairgrass on the substrate of the aquarium, but if you don't think it will work, I don't mind excluding it from my plan. But if it might work...

Hello. I am going to try to get my order list configured to completion today if I can. I'm still not there yet, though.

Ok, I didn't realize that over half the plants I put on my first list were stem plants lol. I still want some stem plants, but not that many.

How about:

x1 Wisteria
x1 Giant Hygro
x2 Water Sprite
x2 Crypts (red)
x1 Dwarf Hairgrass

So how about that? What do you guys think? I don't mind making some final modifications, but I would like to get this ordered before the end of the day if at all possible.
