Hi, I'm looking to purchase a small piece of natural drift wood that does not leak tannis... maybe abou 10 to 12 inches long...

Well,, unless the wood has been boiled ,or came from someones tank after already leaching out the tannin's,then you should expect to boil it or soak it to prevent tannin's .
At 10 to 12 niches,,maybe soaking the piece in tub with every couple day water change, until water remains clear would be the way to let tannin's leach out before it goes in your tank.
Running some carbon in the filter can work but may need to be replaced with fresh carbon two or three times in a month to be real effective.
Tannins don't hurt the fish but some folks just don't like tea colored water.

I have a 'stick' of driftwood a little over a foot long that doesn't seem to be leaching (it's extremely well-aged) but I bet shipping would be a pain (I'd want to keep it wet so it will sink), how much you looking to spend?
