Anyone interested in guppies?

My guppies are over populating my tanks and I'm having trouble selling them locally. They are fancy, but not "pure." I have mostly reddish/orange ones, a few yellow snakeskins and a few with orange tails that have blue spots.

Here are a few pictures.

If anyone is interested, please PM me and we can negotiate.

Thanks for your interest. :D

Just a suggestion, but you might want to seperate the females until you are able to decrease the population. If you do, you can expect more babies in the female-only tank for about 3 months after you seperate, as the females can store the sperm for at least that long. You will need to continue to seperate the males from that tank as they become identifyable, otherwise they will reach maturity and will breed with the adult females.

Have you tried listing them at www.craigslist.com? That may be an option as well.

And as barbaric as it may seem, you may also consider donating them to someone near you as feeders. Guppies will reach plague proportions quite quickly if breeding is allowed to continue.

To add to the "cruelty:

I have one male and two female guppies in a 5g aquarium. Just now, one of the females started giving birth. I moved three of the fry to my 29g where they didn't last more than 5 seconds with the two 2" golden wonder killifish in the tank. Best guppy fry eaters I've ever seen. Pretty, too.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I do have my guppies separated, finally, but many females are still pregnant and birthing away!

I keep trying to find people near me to give/sell some to without luck. I just put an ad in the paper (and online) that was supposed to reach nearly 200,000 readers. I got one response.

I tried Craigslist before too and got many responses, but only one buyer. I guess I'm going to have to start to give some away. Not many want to pay for them. Oh well.

Sorry I cant give tou a better alternative. Unfortunately, Guppies are great for starting out in fiskeeping, but little else. I eventually moved my best looking males to a community tropicals tank, then left the fate of the rest in the hands (or fins) of my African Cichlids. My Cichlids were very welcoming to the guppies, they invited them right in for dinner.

LOL  That was too funny, Steve!

I'm eventually going to branch out myself. I had a turtle until recently that "helped" with some of the extras, but he was getting too much for me and I rehomed him. Of course, I sent 30 or so guppies along with him, so that helped for a short time! :D

I'll just keep trying. As I get more experienced with sexing them it's alot easier to keep the numbers down because the girls don't get pregnant in the first place. Those naughty guppies.

I'd be interested in trios of the cobra type, in your center pic. Pull all of the fry out now and put them in a separate tank. At about 2 months, you can start to separate them by sex. Put each sex in its own tank. At about 4 months, you can pick out the better males and females. I'd be interested in trios (one male + 2 females) IF the females are virgin.

Thanks for the tips Steve. I'm working on it. I still have trouble sexing some of the fish, so many of my females are not virgins at this point in time. I am getting better though!

If I get the trio you're looking for, I'd be more than happy to let you know! 8)

 I would LOVE a couple like the one you've got in the middle picture and in the top one on the right hand side of the picture. But your pretty far from me.

Those are amazing guppies, my male guppies are no where near as pretty as those guys :? I wonder what happened.

Little-Fizz, I'm willing to ship if you want. I shipped some to NC and MD a week ago and they did fine in transit. I do have some like the yellow snakeskin and a few sort of like the one in the middle. There are also many reds in my tank. Let me know. 8)

i wish i could take some but my tank is currently over populated with platies! :(

but you should see if any LFS will take them....i go to Eddie's Aquarium and they will give you store credit. thats where all of mine go once they are big enough. i dont know if you are in the same area as me but if you are i would try that.

Thanks for the idea crazy4fish, but unfortunately there aren't any more local fish stores near me. PetSmart and Petco won't take fish. There are still a couple LFS about an hour away that I may try. The other issue is they often don't give any credit, but will still sell your fish so they can make a profit. I don't think that's fair, but ..........

yea i dont think its right to take peoples fish and make a profit wthout giving them any thing back. :? at least my LFS gives store credit. and personally i wouldnt give my fish to petsmart or petco.... their fish always look sick and uncared for. :(

Do you have any males left that are similar to the one on the right, in the first pic? Spotted with blues/greens/yellows? (no reds though, I have too many reds with my guppies right now, I'm looking for variety) I'm only looking for one or two males, though. I'm in Connecticut, so shipping shouldn't be too far if you are in NY. :D
